TEGUCIGALPA

Go on. Say it. You KNOW you want to.

While I can’t stop saying the name (it is possibly one of the coolest names of any capital city), the locals couldn’t be bothered to say the whole thing. They call it Tegoose.

I have intended to visit Tegucigalpa ever since I learned about it in Grade 8 Geography - and for no other reason than its groovy name. There is little else of interest here. It’s just a hodge-podge of buildings and plazas. There are some colonial gems but they are mostly overshadowed by decrepit 1950’s office blocks that could do with a coat of paint. Even though it will never be a pretty city, it’s not really a bad place. It has a character of it’s own despite its rundown appearance. It’s set in a valley high in the mountains and the cool air makes the diesel fumes a bit more bearable - a bonus in any city that hasn’t quite got around to emission controls.

So we’ve said farewell to Nicaragua and traded in our Moon Handbook for the Honduras edition. The Pacific coast of Nicaragua was great and the Rancho Esperanza – the link I posted last week – will hopefully someday become a successful development project. Sadly none of the programs were up and running at the time so the only volunteer opportunities involved emptying the sawdust toilets in the outhouse to get a dollar off your room rate. We paid the extra dollar. But the enthusiasm with which the ‘volunteers’ approached their respective chores gave me the feeling that if Nate’s developments projects don’t take off, he will at very least become a successful cult leader.

We’re making a move for Trujillo on the Caribbean coast in the morning which will hopefully be a good jump off spot to get to the Mosquito Coast. We have some vague plans but from what we’ve read, there is no way to map your exact route or time your journey. I can safely say there will be no internet, so I’m off for the next week at the very least.

Who needs Central America when you have Stephen Harper...!? Hurry back KTJ...the Reformers are coming! Well, that's not entirely true...it's more like the Not-So-Progressive Conservative Party.

Where's Stockwell when you need him?
